  • Part III: Ritual Actions in Different Areas of Confrontation

    Stefan Olsson

Chapter from the book: Olsson, S. 2019. The Hostages of the Northmen: From the Viking Age to the Middle Ages.

Part III, the theoretical perspectives presented in Part I are applied to various cases of hostages in the Scandinavian societies as well as societies outside Scandinavia, including the Danelaw in England and in the confrontations between Scandinavians and Franks in the Merovingian kingdom and the later Carolingian Empire (800–888). Examples of confrontations, with the use of hostages, between and within the Norwegian and Danish realms are also given.
