This chapter discusses the historical sources that were used for Performing Premodernity’s production of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Pygmalion (1762/1770) and the way the practical work influenced the group’s understanding of the scène lyrique. Studying video recordings of the production, and reflecting on the continued collaboration with the performers, the author delves into the question of why her emotional response to the production grew stronger over the years.
