Part III, the theoretical perspectives presented in Part I are applied to various cases of hostages in the Scandinavian societies as well as societies outside Scandinavia, including the Danelaw in England and in the confrontations between Scandinavians and Franks in the Merovingian kingdom and the later Carolingian Empire (800–888). Examples of confrontations, with the use of hostages, between and within the Norwegian and Danish realms are also given.
