Chapter from the book: Sullet-Nylander, F et al. 2019. Political Discourses at the Extremes: Expressions of Populism in Romance Speaking Countries.
This paper analyzes the similarities of the so-called “populist discourses” (Charaudeau, 2009) in two new parties appeared on the Spanish political scene in the last decade (Podemos and Ciudadanos), through interventions of their two leaders in the Spanish Parliament (Pablo Iglesias and Albert Rivera). The conclusion reached is that in their discursive practices the staging and the scenes are similar, but they differ in the more purely linguistic features that their discourses present.
Their words determine that both speakers project a different social image in front of the citizens: in one case, closer to classical populism, and, in the other one, apparently further from this.
