When literature circulates across geographical, cultural and linguistic borders it is transformed, and the different aspects of this transformation tell us a great deal about intercultural communication as such. This chapter investigates how Swedish working-class fiction from the 1930s is reshaped, repackaged and recontextualized when translated into English and published in Great Britain and the US. It points out nine different kinds of transformations, thus providing a set of aspects that may be applied to any kind of circulated literary material, and it argues that an analysis of these changes requires a diverse theoretical framework.
